Smerinthus ocellata
Distribution:
Northwest Africa and most of Europe, east into temperate Asia as far as the Altai
Wingspan:
in between 7,5 and 9 cm.
Season:
depends on the temperature, 1 to 2 flights annually. In captivity quite often a second flight.
Food plants:
Salix, Populus, Prunus avium and sometimes Rosa and Malus
Rearing:
Very easy, suitable for newcomers. Keep in (spacious) well ventilated plastic containers, in a netted cage or sleeved outdoors on a living willow.. Fast growing and ready to pupate within four weeks. Keep the pupae in the fridge to overwinter.
