Pantophaea favillacea
Distribution:
widespread throughout south and east Africa, from Zimbabwe and Mozambique to Kenya, Congo (RDC) and Gabon. The animals depicted here originate from the Dzalanyama Forest (Malawi), where they fly in low numbers.
Wingspan:
in between 7,5 and 8 cm, females are slightly larger and more darker grey
Season:
Multiple flights annually, as long as temperatures and humidity remain high enough.
Food plants:
Ligustrum, with a preference for L. vulgare
Rearing:
Very easy and suitable for newcomers. Everything about this species is fast. Caterpillars are fully grown is less then four weeks (depending mostly on the temperature). They do well in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers. No need to move them to netted cages when older, but it doesn't harm either as they do not appreciate too much condensation. Otherwise, do what you would do with a Sphinx or Acherontia. The pupal stage is short as well, only a couple of weeks.
Difficulties:
none
