Distribution:

Southeast Africa, from Malawi and Tanzania south to South Africa

Wingspan:

8 to 12 cm

Season:

one to two flights annually, but not continuously. Pupal stage can take months

Food plants:

Prunus (including laurocerasus), Liquidambar, Salix, Ricinus

Rearing:

Suitable for newcomers, though a minimum of experience is required. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. Make sure the food is clean and fresh.  Tolerant of a wide range of temperatures as long as it does not become to cool (minimum living room temperature). The caterpillars are not the fastest growers and ready to pupate within 6 to 8 weeks. The pupal stage can take several months.

Difficulties:

avoid moist conditions
