Gonimbrasia (Lobobunaeoides) eblis
Distribution:
West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to West Kenya and south throughout Cameroon and Congo to Gabon and Tanzania
Wingspan:
up to 16 cm. Males larger then females
Season:
one to two flights annually, but not continuously. Pupal stage can take months
Food plants:
Salix caprea and cinerea, Mahonia aquifolium, Rubus, Rosa
Rearing:
Suitable for newcomers, though a minimum of experience is required. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. Make sure the food is clean and fresh. Tolerant of a wide range of temperatures as long as it does not become to cool (minimum living room temperature). The caterpillars are fast growing and ready to pupate within 4 to 6 weeks. The pupal stage can take several months.
