Campimoptilum kuntzei

Distribution:

widespread and common throughout south and east Africa, from South Africa to Tanzania and Congo (RDC). The animals depicted here originate from the Dzalanyama Forest (Malawi). In a large part of its distribution, males are absent. This is also the case for the Malawi population. Females reproduce without males. Offspring of such females are all and always female as well.

Wingspan:

in between five and seven cm

Season:

Usually only one flight annually. Pupal stage can take months. Emerging of the adults is fairly synchronized, starting somewhere in October, depending on your rearing conditions, though in captivity some premature emerging is possible in Juin or July, especially when weather is warm and humid.

Food plants:

many Fabaceae, both woody and herbaceous. Can be reared on Medicago sative for exemple. In captivity they do also extremely well on many Cistaceae,, especially the ones with smaller leaves like Halimium 'April Sun' .

Rearing:

Not particularly difficult even while rearing in the winter. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. Make sure the food is clean and fresh.  Does well at an average living room temperature. The caterpillars grow relatively fast and are ready to pupate within 7 to 8 weeks. The pupal stage takes several months.

Difficulties:

avoid moist conditions, but otherwise none
