Actias artemis
Distribution:
east Asia (China, Korea, Russia and Japan). Several of the former subspecies (alinda, dulcinea) have been upgraded to full species status.
Wingspan:
around 10 centimeter (males have longer hind wing tales and are a bit smaller)
Season:
multiple flights when kept warm. Pupae overwinter.
Food plants:
Rosa, Crataegus, Salix, Juglans, Alnus and others
Rearing:
An easy species, suitable for newcomers. Keep warm and clean, in well ventilated plastic containers (just watch out for condensation). Fast growing and ready to pupate within 4 to 5 weeks. The pupal stage in between flights is short (approximately 2 to 3 weeks). The warmer the faster they develop. Cocoons after the last flight in autumn can overwinter in the fridge.
