Pallastica species South Africa

Distribution:

The species in these pictures comes from South Africa. I believe this is Pallastica lateritia, a species that is widespread throughout Africa from Mali to South Africa

Wingspan:

females large (in between 6 and 7,5 centimeter), males much smaller (less then 4,5 cm)

Season:

In captivity continuously when kept at room temperature

Food plants:

Rubus, Arbutus and somewhat reluctantly Rhododendron

Rearing:

Easy but fairly slow during winter months. Caterpillars are ready to pupate in 3 months (faster in the warmer part of the year) .  Keep the first 3 to 4 stages in well ventilated plastic containers and move to netted cages when older. Keep dry and warm (room temperature).  Pupal stage is short (approximately 2 to 3 weeks).

Difficulties:

sensitive to poor quality food during winter months
